We were tasked to rethink an interface for Umeå municipality and a children refugee camp in Sweden. The obsolete software was mainly used within the community but its rather poor user experience was leading to frustration and abandonment from community users.

How could an improved interface help for better society integration and teaching to refugees?

CHALLENGE.
Umeå Kommun is the biggest employer in Västerbotten with 11300 employees within various professions. Beställartorget is a new approach to buy products and services. The system will be applied to all employees and will lead to freeing up more time for core business and customers. The project was realized in collaboration with Umeå kommun, placing the main focus on children refugee camp Pangea.
CONCEPT.
The Beställartorget system offers a more holistic approach for Umeå kommun employees to order items needed to assist their work. It focuses on ways to improve communication between co-workers, and makes the ordering system more understandable and fun to use, educates people through daily routine activities and most importantly, helps people to save time.
Pangea.
Pangea is a refugee quarter for children from abroad who have left their countries due to armed conflict. The care workers help the children to grow up, teaching them Swedish and how to behave within the society. Meanwhile, because of an obsolete and inefficient system their daily tasks are made more difficult.

Problems.
Today, Pangea has a lot of issues in different areas. All these inconvenient situations add up and take an unnecessarily long time. One of the most obvious problem areas is the existing payment system mainly because it is time-consuming. Also, the Beställartorget catalogue doesn’t satisfy all users’ needs, so they end up going to shops directly, due to a lack of reliable communication system between employees. As observed in Pangea, people are often uninformed and are not given the chance to take part and order products. Most of the employees don’t have an access to an ordering system.

Solution.
With Beställartorget, we offer a central communication and ordering platform, accessible by anyone at anytime, through a smartphone or personal computer that is continually updated with the latest information. Our system allows people who were often uninformed to request items at the best price. This central piece is a good way to follow others activities and promote their own participation. The users within Pangea’s office could, for example, interact easily with it and decrease time spent away from their main job.
